The Grand, as the opera house is commonly known, has hosted performers from William “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Ethel Barrymore to John Philip Sousa, the prominent composer. The space was used exclusively as a movie theater between 1930 and 1967, when it was owned by Warner Brothers.

The Grand presents more than 75 shows each season, ranging from symphony orchestras and ballets to the latest rock and comedy stars, with jazz, folk, and family artists as well. The Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, and First State Ballet Theatre are all in residence at The Grand, presenting full schedules in each of their disciplines. Between The Grand, its resident performing companies, and rentals, the building hosts more than 300 events a year bringing more than 120,000 people into downtown Wilmington and through its doors. Holding onto hope when times are tough can take an awful lot of determination, and sometimes, an awful lot of determination comes in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has reminded generations of theatergoers that sunshine is always right around the corner, and now the best-loved musical of all time is set to return in a new production – just as you remember it and just when we need it most. ANNIE, directed by Jenn Thompson, features the iconic book and score, written by Tony Award® winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin.

Patrons are also welcome to bring their own refreshments to outdoor performances at the OperaDelaware Studios. Commissioned by the Delaware Grand Lodge of Masons, a fraternal Freemason organization, the Grand Opera House originally served as a temple and an auditorium. It was designed in the Second Empire style by Wilmington native Thomas Dixon, a prominent architect. The design of the Grand Opera House is notable for its use of cast iron and for the Freemasonry symbolism incorporated into its facade. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural importance. With more than 120 performances a year, the Grand’s three venues offer the very best entertainment options and something to please every taste.
For travel by plane, the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and the New Castle County Airport (ILG) are about a 20-minute car ride from Downtown Wilmington. Our performances take place either at the OperaDelaware Studios (4 S. Poplar St. Wilmington) which includes the Ethel L. Sayre Recital Hall and the Presser Black Box Theater, or at The Grand (818 N. The 109-year old Playhouse on Rodney Square is famously known for having been built by 100 men in 150 working days and at one point held the distinction as having one of the largest singular steel beams ever made to top off the proscenium arch.
